Not all security camera Digital Video Recorders, or DVRs, are created equal. Remember this as you look for security camera DVRs for your business. There are great DVRs, good DVRs, and DVRs so terrible you cannot tell what you’re looking at.

DVR stands for Digital Video Recorder. It is faster and easier to manage than non-digital and analog systems. Moreover, it provides instant access to recorded or live video. You need not worry about storage, too, because the bulk of video that can be stored on a single disc tremendously outweighs that stored on tape. In fact, a single disc is the equivalent of over 30 VCR tapes. What this means is that you get to economize on space use and costs. The bigger your office space and thus, the more cameras you use, the more you will be able to appreciate the money DVRs can save you.

There are two main types of security camera DVRs, pc-based and stand-alone.

PC-based Security Camera DVR with Video Capture Board

A PC-based DVR is a digital video recorder built like a computer. It may consist of two things: a tower mount or a rack mount. Inside it, you will find a mother board, network card, video card, CPU, hard drive, and memory. The DVR video card and the DVR software give users remote access. The DVR capture board receives video directly from security cameras. The DVR software, in turn, works in conjunction with the DVR board to first, change captured video images into a manageable and recognizable format and second, to provide camera controls, as well as record and playback functions.

Stand-alone Security Camera DVR

A stand-alone security camera DVR is an all-in-one unit. All components of a stand-alone security camera DVR are built on one complete circuit board. Its appearance is very similar to that of a VCR or DVD player. Stand-alone security camera DVRs are highly reliable and are very easy to use and install.

The Difference

A stand-alone security camera DVR is very reliable and user-friendly, mostly because it is built on only one circuit board. One need not worry about system crashes or software conflicts because all the hardware and software are embedded on one board. A PC-based security camera DVR, on the other hand, offer more advances features and are better suited for upgrades and systems expansions. They have bigger CPUs and memory, and you can easily add burners and hard drives.

Stand-alone Versus PC-based

Most heavy and large-scale users, such as banks and airports, opt for PC-based models. Just because they do, however, doesn’t mean you should join in the bandwagon and purchase the same for your office or factory. In truth, you should base your choice of security camera DVR on your surveillance needs. If your company’s camera network is comparatively small and does not require much use of sophisticated controls, then a stand-alone security camera DVR should suffice. If, on the other hand, your surveillance needs require the use of sophisticated controls or if you are planning to expand your company’s surveillance system in the future, then the wisest choice would be a PC-based model.

Here’s another way of looking at it. If reliability and stability are what matters most to you, then buy a stand-alone security camera DVR. If advanced viewing, playback and video file saving over the Internet mean more to you, then go for a PC-based security camera DVR.

Ultimately, what would matter the most is not the type of security camera DVR you purchased but how it protects your business.

Your DVR should be able to store large chunks of surveillance videos and burn them into DVDs. It should have security features such as motion detection and colored bar screens. When your budget is tight, you can always buy a DVR card to use your computer to keep surveillance videos. Install the DVR card inside your computer if you know how. But to be sure, you can ask an expert to do it for you. Using a DVR card is a cost-effective way to store hours and hours of video. However, DVR cards are not recommended for security systems with more than 4 channels.

Digital Video Recording Software

Efficient DVR security systems are always run with software that is dependable and easy to use. It is a good practice to install all the drivers and software that come with your DVR card or device to achieve full functionality. Do not mix and match your devices with flimsy third party software. Your DVR might become very unstable if you do so, basically ruining the entire system. If you feel that a particular piece of software is better than the one that goes with the package, ask an expert for functionality and compatibility issues. It may not be able to start your DVR, so better be safe than sorry.

You can find all kinds of DVRs in the market, each one unique in terms of form and purpose. You should not be too quick in spending your money over a device that is not appropriate for your needs. Remember, the best DVR security systems are efficient, not outlandish or excessive.

Suspicious as you are do not nag and mope. Be your energetic self and stay in touch with friends. Like your video security cameras, friends will there for you when you need them most.

A regular video camera is usually fine when recording videos by day, but they suck at night. They can’t record a decent video with low or no light conditions. That is why they are useless as video cameras. If you want to feel safe and secure, one can’t go wrong with an infrared security camera.

What is an infrared security camera, how does it work and why do you need it? Infrared cameras work regardless of whatever lighting conditions, despite having zero light. Thus, they can ‘see’ in the dark, to see whether a person is loitering around your property and attempt to burglarize your home or store.

The science behind this powerful video camera is the infrared technology. Infrared light is something we cannot see with our own eyes. Its wavelength is too long and the frequency too low to be seen by the naked eye. ‘Infrared’ literally means ‘below red’, and our eyes are only designed to ‘see’ the colors of the spectrum, from red to violet.

An infrared security camera makes use of the infrared LED lighting that is positioned after the camera lens in order to capture information, even when there is zero light present. Rather then measuring light, infrared is able to measure heat coming from objects within the environment, and in turn can be read by the security camera. Infrared can travel fast through fog, smoke and dust, and even capable of traveling through some materials.

To measure the infrared camera’s quality, you need to know the camera’s lux. A lux is the amount of light necessary to produce a picture. The best infrared cameras have 0.0 lux because it can see perfectly in complete darkness. Aside from their ability at night vision, you have to see how far your camera can see in complete darkness. Some cameras can be of short range, while some are long range enough to see up to 150 feet in utter darkness. Depending on the size of your property, you can select which type of camera is useful for you.

Infrared cameras give you a clear and colored picture when light is available. As the lighting worsens, the camera gives you a black and white picture, meaning it has switched to the infrared mode. Not to be confused with day/night cameras, a day/night is very sensitive that can capture videos in the low light conditions. However, it does not make use of the infrared technology. Night cameras still need a light source though, like a street light or a security light, and will be unable to record videos when light is unavailable.

Infrared cameras can be used inside or outside. For inside cameras, the dome style is a useful type that is mounted on the ceiling, allowing a 360-degree surveillance. For outside cameras, go all out and invest in weatherproof bullet style models only that can survey a wide amount of area. Provide yourself, your family and your property the best protection whatever environmental and weather conditions it has to endure.
