what is the best home security system?

im moving into a new home and looking to add a home security system i only know of a few: adt and brinks? i dont know much about them.

Monitored systems are the best. An important note is that you would need to probably sign a contract. Different security companies charge you different amounts up front. Installation fees vary from company to company. I think overall that ADT is one of the cheaper installation fee companies. Here are some costs for ADT per month:

and then some cost comparisons between companies:

Broadview security is being merged into ADT so those aren’t really necessary to compare:

One thing I would purchase with a security system is a key fob. They come with some systems from ADT and are nice if you are in one part of your house and you want to set the alarm off. Some people elect to get a second security panel, but you can get the key fob and keep that beside your bed. If there is trouble, just hit the button, of course your alarm would probably be on anyway, but it’s a nice safety feature.

Most systems come with 2 to 3 door or window sensors, a siren inside, a panel, and they throw in security signs as well most of the time. Beware of those places that say that they offer a “free” security system. There is nothing for free out there, and they usually end up charging you higher monthly fees as well as an installation fee.

You may see advertisements for wireless systems. There’s really no difference between the wireless / wired and no real benefit that I can see. They both work roughly the same, it’s just the wireless costs you more.

Good luck,

Can anyone recommend a wireless home security camera brand/model (good in low light)?

I am looking for a wireless home security camera I can place in a window. I have read some reviews and cannot find one that is good in low light that is in my price range. I would not want to spend more than $300. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

What will you be wirelessly connecting the camera to?

If a video security video recorder like

or a modified computer, then one with a base station that connects with an RCA cable to the recorder (or newly installed PC card) would be appropriate.

If you want it to be directly on a computer network (IP-based), and there is no base station (but yout wireless router needs to be working propertly), then an IP network camera is appropriate – and you see what the camera sees by connecting to it using a web browser on your computer…

In either case, for no- or low-light applications, the camera needs to see in the dark using infrared LEDs which come on when it gets dark enough.

Also, keep in mind that “wireless” is ONLY the video connection. The camera still needs a wire – for power. Some – not all – also have a small mic for picking up audio, too.

Wireless Home Security Camera: the Best Features

The wireless home security camera has given developers even more to work with since the components can be installed anywhere with just a battery pack as its power source. The technology for the wireless home security camera is advancing so much so that you can do all sorts of interesting things with it by yourself. The present day wireless home security camera is packed with more features that it seems to be something out of the future.

WIFI Control

Snaking cables (or any cables for that matter) can be a nuisance. And these are connections that you can’t bring with you outside of the home. Imagine how difficult it will be just to connect to your home security camera and how much you will be spending to do it. The beauty of the wireless home security camera changes all of that with the simple use of WIFI technology. With WIFI, you can control your wireless home security camera anywhere as long as you can connect to the Internet. Of course, your wireless home security camera system must be hooked up to the Internet as well. With WIFI, you can control your wireless home security camera with a remote computer, laptop, or even a WIFI capable phone which is not uncommon to find these days. With the right software technology you will even be able to see what your wireless home security camera “sees” from any location with Internet access. This gives you endless options of how you want to monitor your family and valuables.

Night Vision

Although there are many people who still prefer the conventional black and white recordings off of their wireless home security camera, even that department has advanced with time. Today, one wireless home security camera option allows you to record all sorts of activity in complete darkness. This option for a wireless home security camera can be very helpful especially if you travel through different time zones on a regular basis. For example, while in New York, you can still use your wireless home security camera back home in Los Angeles even thought its night time there. A wireless home security camera with night vision can also be placed in dark areas of the house such as the garage and the basement so you can still keep an eye on things in those places.

Infrared

A wireless home security camera can also act as a security camera in the sense that it can detect objects around a room or on people themselves. Although this is an awkward feature, it is an available one nevertheless. A wireless home security camera can also have built-in infrared so that you can detect metal objects around a room and maybe on people. This is helpful if, for example, you are in the house when an intruder enters. You will know right away if that person is armed or not with a dangerous weapon by looking through the infrared option in your wireless home security camera.

The modern wireless home security camera is almost military-grade. It can do all sorts of advanced things to keep your home safe and secure. Know what you will need to protect your home so that you know exactly what features to look out for in a wireless home security camera.

Are Wireless Home-security Systems Better?

It is difficult to determine whether or not wireless home-security systems are better than hard-wired systems because there truly is no right answer. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. What it truly boils down to is your personal preference. But there are some distinguishing features between the two that can help you decipher.

If you are just building a house and want to have a legitimate security system, installing a hard-wired security system is perfect. The reason for this is because the structural frame is still exposed giving you an easy accessibility. It makes it much more difficult to install a hard-wired security system when you have to drill holes and knock out certain areas of the home.

One of the best features of a hard-wired system is that you are notified when the wires are cut. Generally you hide the wires inside the wall, which is why it is beneficial to install one while building a home. But if for some reason the burglar finds the wires and cuts them, the alarm will be triggered automatically. You will find that hard-wired security systems are good at self-monitoring, which is a weak point to wireless home-security systems.

To the other side, obviously wireless home-security systems are much easier to install. Because there are no wires to hide, there is no house renovation needed and you can install it any time you please without much trouble. This can be particularly handy if you are temporarily renting a home that cannot have any renovation whatsoever. It allows you to still get the protection without doing any damage.

While it is easier to install, wireless systems will require more maintenance and upkeep to keep it in good condition. Generally wireless systems run on batteries, which can be horrible if you do not notice. The last thing you want is to have your place burglarized because the batteries were dead in your camera.

The best thing to do is inspect your wireless home-security system once a month to make sure it is working properly. If you do not want to check the batteries regularly, you can purchase a plug-in unit instead.

But the number one advantage to having a wireless system is the flexibility and portability. You can quickly take down and move your camera to any area in the house without much trouble at all. There is no tearing down a mounting kit or putting holes in the walls to regain the wires. All you have to do is grab the camera and place it in the new location.

There are benefits and downsides to having each of the two systems. But you have to realize that either system is better than nothing. It is up to you to decide whether you want a hard-wired security system or a wireless home-security system.

Bought a PC Wireless 4 Camera DVR Security Surveillance System from Ebay?

Just bought this system from ebay.Wondering if anyone knows how to setup the webcam server for remote monitoring.Looks like by the instructions that it was straight forward, but no luck.Any help?
Rich

mmm, not much to go on, but i’ll try.
I’m guessing there is a ‘webcam server’ setting in the menu that you already turned on, if not, well, i’ll really need to know what system it is before I can say anything usefully then.
But assuming there is, and you already turned it on as described in the instructions the place where it usually goes wrong is either:
-ports in your router are not opened for traffic
-ports on your router are not set up to to rout you to the dvr
for both thing you need to check witch port is used by the dvr, then go to the config page of your router and check under ‘virtual server’ or ‘address translation’ and check if those ports are routed to the dvr.

for anything more concrete i nee more info about what goes wrong/what system/type of connection you want (web interface or a installed program)
