If you keep a firearm, whether it is a handgun, a rifle or a shot gun then the law states that it is your responsibility to ensure that it is kept in a safe place, preferably a gun safe or cabinet. A safe or cabinet that is used for storing any kind of firearm must conform to British Standards 7558(1992).

Gun safes and cabinets should be securely attached to a hard surface, and it should not be possible to remove the fixing bolt with a force less than 2kN. Gun safes or cabinets should always be kept locked with at least one secure lock; alternatively a pre-hardened close shackle padlock of no less than 1,000 differs should be used. Gun safes or cabinets should be stored in a secure, preferably concealed place and a garage or outhouse is not really suited to the purpose. You should only use safes and cabinets that meet the British Standard mentioned above to store firearms. Other cabinets may be allowed but they have to be examined by a firearms enquiry officer who will decide whether or not they are suitable.

Handguns

Handguns come under section 5 of the firearms act and as such it is illegal to own one in the UK unless you have an exemption certificate granting permission to possess a handgun. If you own a handgun then it should be kept in a gun cabinet or secure cabinet made from steel.

Shotguns

If you keep a shotgun then ideally it should be stored in a dedicated gun cabinet, however, if a gun cabinet is not available then some other approved method of storage should be used. Alternative storage should conform to specified safety measures and similar security to a gun cabinet. This can be in a substantial locked cupboard or it should be secured to a wall with a chain or wire hawser and this should also be locked.

Rifles

Rifles need to be stored in a dedicated gun cabinet or in a special gun room that has adequately secured doors and windows. The rifle bolts should be stored separately from the rifle and in a similar container. The bolt container may be a part of the gun cabinet providing it has its own separate locking system. Ammunition should always be stored separately in a ventilated box and then a locked container. Again this can be part of the main cabinet but should be locked separately.

General Safety Concerns

If you keep several guns then you really should consider installing an intruder alarms system that conforms to British Standards 4737.

All of the external doors to premises where guns are kept should be secured with five lever mortice locks. If you live in a high risk area or in premises such as a shared house or block of flats then you should not keep guns there. Firearms should be stored away from the area at an armoury or with a firearms dealer. If you are a gun collector then you should not keep them on open display.

How everyone protects their family has now become a real cause for concern as the day goes on. No one can be sure of not being a victim of home invasion in America anymore. These things have become very unpredictable, to say the least.

It is for this reason that it is very essential for everyone to use some form of home security. We all need some way of keeping the bad guys away and our lovely family safe inside the house. In that vain, I wonder… are you among the smart few who have a security system in your home, like an alarm or even a panic room?

Those days these security items were only for the rich and famous, but these days they have become necessities. Everyone should consider having some form of home security so that we won’t be left helpless from the dangers of the predators.

I remember when I was a little kid. We all lived on a farm in what can be called “the middle of nowhere”. We had a two-story home which I can safely say didn’t have any kind of security alarm or even any safe room. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even recall ever having to worry about the need for one.

Of course this wasn’t because our doors were always looked at night. It was more because my father was a law enforcement officer. This always gave me the thought that my father would shoot anyone that broke in.

While this can work as home security measure, it is wiser to look for a more technology based approach, don’t you think? Specifically, I am referring to modern-day alarm systems that would require access codes or even alert the authorities if an intruder approaches the door. Don’t worry… this isn’t some movies.

It is now very feasible for almost everyone that wants one. I acquired some new found knowledge on home security after watching a special on it recently. The devices I learnt about will blow your mind. For starters, you can buy locks that need your finger prints before they would open. Amazing? Of course. And note that this wasn’t on Mission Impossible.

Almost every residential home can use such device. When you have it on, you simply approach your front door without any keys and gain access with only your thumb? Isn’t that really amazing? What this means is that no one else will be able to have access to your home, whether they have a lock pick set or not.

Apart from this, there are also certain home security cameras that can catch everything around your home. If you want to place it around your front and rear doors, it will give you the picture of anyone that goes near your home, whether they knock or not.

You may have heard a lot about fire safes, but have you gone out and gotten one yet? There are many things in your home that you wouldn’t want to lose in the case of a fire. There are other things that are essential to life that you most certainly don’t want to have to replace, such as birth certificates, marriages license, financial statements, passports. Everyone needs to have a fire safe, and if you don’t, you might end up regretting that you never took the time to pick one out to protect some of the most valuable items.

I have been told that some fire safes used to be made with asbestos, though I’m not sure if those types of fire safes are available or legal. Some make sure you purchase a new fire safe to avoid the health hazards of asbestos.

Today, there are other materials they use to make fire safes, and if they say they will withstand a fire, you can be sure they will. However, if you have any doubts, you can always look them up online to see which ones others recommended.

There are many things you can put in fire safes, and the size you will need is strictly up to you. It’s possible that not only do you want to protect your personal papers; there are other things that you want to include that have value to you. May be you have tickets from a Broadway play that you attended on your anniversary and you never want to lose, favorite photos of family or friends who are know longer with you. Everyone has stuff like that and unless you have it in a safe deposit box at the bank, you need to look into fire safes so that you know you aren’t going to lose it if a disaster happens.

If your grown children don’t have a fire safe consider it a great gift to give. Also consider the individual who has everything or hard to buy for, this will be a gift to protect what’s so dear to them. Security Features

Security features of different business safes include fireproof, water proof, and water resistance. Fireproof safes are often tested by independent groups, such as the Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL), to test the safes ability to withstand fire. Fireproof safes can keep the contents of the safe secure anywhere from 30 minutes to over 2 hours, check with your manufacturer and the safe model to see its fireproof rating.

Waterproof and water resistant safes are also features that you should consider when deciding on a safe. Waterproof usually means that a safe model was tested by an independent group for keeping the contents of the safe secure when completely submerged in water for a certain period of time.

Water resistance usually means that a safe was tested in standing water for a certain period of time and was able to keep the contents of the safe secure. Check the details of the safe model you are considering because each manufacturer has their own definitions and tests to determine whether a safe can be considered waterproof or water resistant.
