Home Security For Renters and Apartment Dwellers

By Richard Armen

If you rent an apartment, you’re out of luck when it comes to home security, right? Actually, there is a lot you can do protect your personal safety if you live in an apartment building. Home security for apartment-dwellers starts not after you rent the place, but when finding a place to rent. Always ask yourself: does this area look safe? Does this apartment complex look secure? Only the apartment manager can fix some things, like gate locks or outdoor lighting, so don’t move into a place that is lacking in these essential outdoor security devices.

Don’t ever let the fact that you are in a secure apartment building, or that there are other people nearby, allow you to lower your guard completely. This is especially true in a large building where your neighbors may not know you or who is supposed to be in your home. Apartment complexes are high-traffic areas, and you never know who’s inside the building at any given time.

While it’s neighborly to hold the door open for a neighbor you know well, don’t let just anyone in. Many criminals will stand near a door and pretend to be fumbling with their keys, trusting that a resident of the building will let them in. Keeping your apartment secure starts with the first door to the building.

Once you reach the door to your apartment, be on your guard for anyone who may try to sneak up behind you to gain access to your home. Now is not a time to talk on your cell phone will juggling a bag of groceries and reaching for your keys. Avoid looking distracted or vulnerable in any of the common areas of your apartment building.

Even if you can’t install whole-home security systems or a surveillance system, there are plenty of steps that you can take to secure your apartment. Whether the building is secure or not, you must take your safety into your own hands. Keep your windows and doors locked no matter what floor you live on, even when you’re at home. Always have the locks changed when moving into a new place, since you never know who has copies of the previous renter’s keys. Don’t be too generous when giving out copies. If allowed, install a deadbolt lock for additional security. Never leave spare keys under the welcome mat or on top of the door frame. Burglars are well aware of both of these tricks. You might as well leave the key in the door if this is your plan.

A great option for apartment dwellers is portable door or window alarms. Simply place an alarm on your door or window, and it will sound a loud alarm when someone has opened it. These small devices can easily be taken with you when you move, making them ideal for those in short-term living arrangements.

Getting renter’s insurance, which is similar to homeowners insurance, is an important way to protect your belongings. Sometimes all the home security measures in the world can’t protect your apartment from a break-in.

Tips For Keeping Your Home Safe And Secure

By Gabriel Adams

Our homes are a place in which many of us feel sale. While this is true for the most part, the safety and security of your home should always be on your mind. By implementing a few of the home safety and security tips outlined below, you are likely to protect yourself, your home, and your personal belongings from harm.

Perhaps, the best home security tip to implement is the locking of all doors. Even those who live in “safe,” neighborhoods are encouraged to keep their doors locked, especially at night. In fact, did you know that your doors should be locked even when you are home? This is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your home from intruders.

In addition to door locks, window locks should also be examined. If an intruder is set on getting into your home, a window is a method of entry that they are likely to try. It is a good idea to install locks on all windows in your home; however, it is extremely important to do so on the first floor or with any easy accessible windows. With that being said, buying and installing window locks isn’t enough, as you need to be sure to use them to your advantage as a homeowner.

Another great home security tip involves keeping the entranceways to your home well lit. This includes any backdoors or secondary entrances. For the best sense of safety and security, outdoor motion lights should be used. If motion sensor lights are not an option, be sure to have all lights turned on if you will be returning home after dark. Also, make sure all outdoor light switches are easily accessible to you from both inside and outside of your home.

All homes should clearly be marked with the proper address. This is important, should you need to call on assistance from emergency response professionals. Use large, bright, and bold numbers to highlight your address on your mailbox alongside the road. In addition to a mailbox, a home should also be marked with the proper street address. This will assist with the easy response should someone in your home suffer a medical emergency or if you need to quickly report a break-in.

The above mentioned home security tips are ones that are easy and affordable to implement. However, it is also important to examine home security systems. Although home security systems can get costly, be on the lookout for any sales and discounts, as many reputable home security companies do offer them. In keeping with costs, it is important to look at home security systems as an investment, not just an average, everyday purchase. Should you ever find yourself in an emergency, a home security system can, literally, be a lifesaver.

As a reminder, even if you reside in an area that is deemed “safe,” you can never be too careful. By keeping a close eye on the news, you can easily see that crimes and other emergencies can happen anywhere and at just about any point in time. That is why you should take steps to protect your home, making it safe and secure.

The Importance of Home Security Protection

By Adrianna Noton

Your home and its contents are one of your most valuable investments. As well, protecting your loved ones is one of your most important responsibilities in life. Because statistics have shown that home burglaries are prevalent across the country, it is important to take the necessary steps to secure your home, not just against unauthorized intrusions, but also from such events as fire, floods, carbon monoxide leaks, and more. Fortunately, there are now a wide variety of home security systems designed to keep your home and family safe. The protection home security systems provide will give you peace of mind knowing that you will be alerted in the event of a threat to your home and family.

Burglars know all of the “in and outs” of breaking into a home. They know the best time to intrude and the most vulnerable areas that allow for quick and easy access. The best security system is one that protects the entire home, including the property. There are comprehensive security systems that detect intruders no matter what entrance they choose. These systems can include video surveillance, motion sensors that cover doors and windows, and there are security systems that detect motion in a home. Many homeowners are now using the services of a security alarm company. If an alarm is tripped, the security company will be notified and they will attempt to contact the homeowner. If they are unable to contact the homeowner, they will contact law enforcement.

It is important to have outdoor surveillance when securing your home. Security motion detecting lights are a good choice as they will light up when they detect movement. Outdoor surveillance cameras are also a popular choice. There are even infrared cameras that can capture an image of intruders at night. When choosing indoor or outdoor cameras, you can select from hardwired cameras and wireless cameras. There are even security cameras that can be connected to the internet, so no matter where you are in the world, you can view your home and property. There have been news stories about homeowners witnessing intruders via their broadband and they were able to notify the police.

Home security systems can vary from basic designs to more advanced units. The basic system uses a keypad normally installed near the main door entryway. The keypad allows a homeowner to activate and deactivate the security system using a password they enter into the keypad. If a homeowner has a security company service, they will normally have to give them a password when the company calls after the alarm has been triggered. This is verification that it is actually the homeowner speaking.

There are many features that can come with a home security system. These features include: smoke detector, heat sensor, carbon monoxide detector, flex switch (detects breaking glass) and moisture sensor in the event of a water leak. The prices of home security systems will vary according to the features that come with the system.

It is unfortunate that we now live in a society where there is a risk of harm to our homes; however, it is important to be aware of the risks so that you can take measures to protect your home and family. Purchasing a home security system should not be viewed as an annoying expense, but as an investment in safety and security.

Fire Safes

By Ralph Winn

You may have heard a lot about fire safes, but have you gone out and gotten one yet? There are many things in your home that you wouldn’t want to lose in the case of a fire. There are other things that are essential to life that you most certainly don’t want to have to replace, such as birth certificates, marriages license, financial statements, passports. Everyone needs to have a fire safe, and if you don’t, you might end up regretting that you never took the time to pick one out to protect some of the most valuable items.

I have been told that some fire safes used to be made with asbestos, though I’m not sure if those types of fire safes are available or legal. Some make sure you purchase a new fire safe to avoid the health hazards of asbestos.

Today, there are other materials they use to make fire safes, and if they say they will withstand a fire, you can be sure they will. However, if you have any doubts, you can always look them up online to see which ones others recommended.

There are many things you can put in fire safes, and the size you will need is strictly up to you. It’s possible that not only do you want to protect your personal papers; there are other things that you want to include that have value to you. May be you have tickets from a Broadway play that you attended on your anniversary and you never want to lose, favorite photos of family or friends who are know longer with you. Everyone has stuff like that and unless you have it in a safe deposit box at the bank, you need to look into fire safes so that you know you aren’t going to lose it if a disaster happens.

If your grown children don’t have a fire safe consider it a great gift to give. Also consider the individual who has everything or hard to buy for, this will be a gift to protect what’s so dear to them. You might want to ask someone close to them if they know if they have a fire safe before you go looking for one. You will be giving them the gift of security.
