Hidden Security Cameras – Using A Hidden Camera To Monitor Employees

By Steve Strong

When most people think of security cameras and who they are recording footage of may think of a burglar or unauthorized person who enters or attempts to enter a building. In many cases it is not only the unknown that is being looked at but also the known; many companies will use the systems to keep a careful and watchful eye over their employees. Cameras can be positioned in areas which would be considered vulnerable to catch anyone who is an area or doing something that is not allowed.

It is considered a necessity to have cameras in some institutions and buildings used to monitor the staff, places such as banks, government buildings, hi-tech industries and testing facilities would be common place and the employees would expect the cameras to be in the buildings. It is however very important that the employer is careful about where and how they monitor the staff, if the methods that are undertaken are deemed intrusive then the employer could find themselves in court. There are of course lots of very good reasons as to why the employer would want to install hidden security cameras to monitor their employees; however it is now believed that the privacy of employees in the workplace is becoming intruded upon more and more often.

There are a number of main issues that arise in cases against the employer for miss use of hidden security cameras and these include any form of monitoring in private areas such as bathrooms and changing rooms. Another common problem is for personal information that is gathered from the camera systems when an employee is captured on them being used for commercial purposes. It is also illegal for any form of security camera system in the workplace to be used for audio and visual purposes, it is also not allowed to record verbal/audio in the surveillance footage. A good employer will be aware of the legislation and laws surrounding hidden camera use and will abide by these guidelines, as an employee it is worth making yourself aware of the laws as well.

If you are an employer and considering the installation of a hidden security camera system then there are some guidelines you will need to follow to ensure that you keep on the right side of the law. It is also imperative that all the employees are consulted before hand in writing about what you are installing and why, this letter for the employee should include a waiver to sign so they acknowledge that they have been told. It needs to be carefully laid out with the cameras in locations that would not be considered intrusive and breaking the guidelines, whilst all management should be aware of the privacy risks and briefed on the layout of the systems. A set of guidelines should be drawn out for every employee outlining the privacy policy and the rights that the employees have in respect of their privacy, whilst providing the case and reasons for the installation.

Home Security For Renters and Apartment Dwellers

By Richard Armen

If you rent an apartment, you’re out of luck when it comes to home security, right? Actually, there is a lot you can do protect your personal safety if you live in an apartment building. Home security for apartment-dwellers starts not after you rent the place, but when finding a place to rent. Always ask yourself: does this area look safe? Does this apartment complex look secure? Only the apartment manager can fix some things, like gate locks or outdoor lighting, so don’t move into a place that is lacking in these essential outdoor security devices.

Don’t ever let the fact that you are in a secure apartment building, or that there are other people nearby, allow you to lower your guard completely. This is especially true in a large building where your neighbors may not know you or who is supposed to be in your home. Apartment complexes are high-traffic areas, and you never know who’s inside the building at any given time.

While it’s neighborly to hold the door open for a neighbor you know well, don’t let just anyone in. Many criminals will stand near a door and pretend to be fumbling with their keys, trusting that a resident of the building will let them in. Keeping your apartment secure starts with the first door to the building.

Once you reach the door to your apartment, be on your guard for anyone who may try to sneak up behind you to gain access to your home. Now is not a time to talk on your cell phone will juggling a bag of groceries and reaching for your keys. Avoid looking distracted or vulnerable in any of the common areas of your apartment building.

Even if you can’t install whole-home security systems or a surveillance system, there are plenty of steps that you can take to secure your apartment. Whether the building is secure or not, you must take your safety into your own hands. Keep your windows and doors locked no matter what floor you live on, even when you’re at home. Always have the locks changed when moving into a new place, since you never know who has copies of the previous renter’s keys. Don’t be too generous when giving out copies. If allowed, install a deadbolt lock for additional security. Never leave spare keys under the welcome mat or on top of the door frame. Burglars are well aware of both of these tricks. You might as well leave the key in the door if this is your plan.

A great option for apartment dwellers is portable door or window alarms. Simply place an alarm on your door or window, and it will sound a loud alarm when someone has opened it. These small devices can easily be taken with you when you move, making them ideal for those in short-term living arrangements.

Getting renter’s insurance, which is similar to homeowners insurance, is an important way to protect your belongings. Sometimes all the home security measures in the world can’t protect your apartment from a break-in.

When a Stranger Eyeballs Your Home Security Camera

By Nahshon Roberts

You are startled when a strange face caught by your home security camera looks at you from your PC screen. The stranger is in your bedroom and he is blissfully unaware that he’s on camera! What do you do next?

Hot Numbers to Have at All Times

When your home security camera captures a strange face looking at you from your PC screen you want to jump into the monitor and clobber him and gloat Storm’s line in the X-Men “You know what happens when a toad gets stuck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else.” Corny line but you get the satisfaction letting him know who the boss is; but you can’t. You’re far away from home and you don’t have the speed of the Beast.

Anybody who has installed a home security camera should be ready for this kind of encounter. Since you’re no X-men, you can’t rush out of the office and be home in a flash. You can only call your friendly neighbor and the police or alert the people at home to get out of the house fast before the “bad guy” decides to take a hostage or harm them in any way.

Who do you call first? If the kids are at home with the nanny, call the nanny first and tell her to grab the kids and get out of the house fast. Next call 911 or the police and they’ll do the rest after you give clear directions to your home. Now you know which numbers you must have in case your home security camera captures a stranger’s face.

When It’s too Late to Catch the Thief

When the intruder is not nabbed on time, the video recording from the home security camera is enough to provide evidence for the police. The recorded images will be compared with the mug shots of common felons prowling the area.

The experience should teach you to double check all windows and doors, the basement and the attic. Movement and smoke detection alarms should be immediately installed because you can never be smug about your home security.

Work out a drill for family members and the nanny if there is one and involve the nearest neighbor to cooperate and extend the same the support to this neighbor in case thieves break into his house too.

The Drill

If you and your spouse are out at work Mondays to Fridays then the drill should be for your nanny and kids. Nanny and kids should be all together in one place at all times and the best place would be the living room where nanny can grab everybody and hustle them out of the door before the intruder senses company. Thus, everything the kids need for the day should be stationed in the living room or within easy reach. Nanny should be taught to keep an eye on the monitor in case the home security camera picks up something unusual.

Let nanny understand that there is no sense making a ruckus and panicking. She must quietly pick up the kids and get out fast. She must make it to the neighbor’s doorstep and then call the police. While you watch your PC’s monitor and follow the movements of the thief from your home security camera, take note of everything you see the thief removes from your room. You will need the information for the police. When you see a stranger’s face, get everybody moving!

Making Home A Safe Place For Your Children

By Claire Quaty

When you have small children in the house, it is crucial to “child proof” your home. It is amazing the things that little kids can find to get into; and many such things are potential hazards.

In the kitchen it is important to make sure that all knives are kept well out of reach, and that child proof locks are kept on any cabinet doors that may be concealing anything such as household cleaners, electric utensils that utilize cords, etc. It is also wise to have a stove guard that will protect little fingers from being burned when the stove is in use. When cooking with pots and pans, make sure that all handles are pointed away from the front and sides of the stove where a small child may have access to them.

In the bathroom, even though you have all that ample cabinet space under the sink, it is not the place to store soaps, shampoos and other chemicals that could be poisonous to a child if swallowed. This low space is best used to store washrags and towels, as these items pose no threat to a curious child. Personal hygiene items should be kept in a high cabinet, preferably with a lock, especially if your youngster is a climber! Also, if your little one is old enough to get themselves in and out of the tub, make sure that your hot water heater is not set high enough to produce scalding water out of the tap, and don’t forget to place those non-skid pads inside the bathtub to prevent nasty falls.

In the child’s bedroom, make sure that there are no toys that are small enough to be placed into the mouth. Check their toy box on a regular basis for hazards, as there is no telling what they may get their hands on and stash in there. Any cords attached to blinds or curtains should be cut and wrapped at the top, well out of the child’s reach, so as to prevent them from getting the cord wrapped around their necks. Also check the space between the bed and the wall; there have been many reported fatalities of children rolling off of the bed and becoming wedged in this small, suffocating space.

Throughout the rest of the house, all of the aforementioned rules apply. In addition, all doors leading out of the house should contain a highly placed deadbolt lock, which will prevent the child from leaving the house without your knowledge. Utilize safety plugs in all of the electrical outlets, and make sure that any toxic plants are kept outdoors.

It is best not to have glass top tables in the same house as small children, but if you must, place leather corner protectors around all corners.

While it may seem a little time consuming, making sure your house is safe for the little ones is your ultimate responsibility, and you will sleep better at night knowing that you have taken all the precautionary measures to keep your youngsters healthy, safe and happy.

Barking Dog Alarms

By Richard Armen

As a homeowner, you should be thinking about ways you can reduce the probability of burglars breaking into your home. There are a lot of options when it comes to keeping your home safe, from electronic alarms to exterior lighting to pepper spray. A number of homeowners have also turned to dog barking alarms, one of the more unique products on the market.

Other security alarms only sound after the burglar has already entered the home. A barking dog alarm, on the other hand, keeps intruders from breaking into the home in the first place. These alarms are designed to set off the sound of dogs barking when burglars get within about twenty feet of the home. The goal of this alarm is to create the illusion that there is an angry dog in the home.

The success of this alarm relies greatly upon how realistic the barking sound is. Today, the sounds emanating from a high-quality dog barking alarm are nearly indistinguishable from the barking of a real dog. Many homeowners opt for this alarm because they recognize the deterrent power of having a dog in the home, but don’t wish to own a pet dog. Law enforcement statistics show that one of the most effective ways to deter criminal activity on your property is to own a dog. Although an electronic dog is not the real thing, the sound of barking can be a powerful deterrent for burglars. Even those who aren’t dog owners can benefit from the sound of a barking dog alarm.

How does a barking dog alarm work? The sound of an unfriendly dog is enough to scare away many burglars. They haven’t come prepared to deal with that possibility, and certainly don’t want to be attacked by an angry dog as they attempt to break into its owner’s home. The mere sound of a dog bark will make anyone think twice before entering. With this type of alarm, you’ll have a big dog protecting your property, without the need to actually own a dog.

Barking dog alarms use built-in sensors to detect trespassers even through windows or walls, with a sensitivity of ten to 20 feet. The sound increases as trespassers get closer, as if the dog is getting even angrier at the intruder. Unlike whole-house security alarms, installation is simple and can be done by the homeowner. Many of these alarms can be moved from place to place and installed in almost any area you want them to be in just minutes. Of course, they require much lower maintenance than owning a real dog.

Not just homes, but also apartments, RVs, warehouses, and commercial buildings can be protected by these alarms. A barking dog alarm can be the perfect watchdog. Active and alert 24 hours a day, the sound of a barking dog will not only keep away intruders, but also alert you to the potential issue. A barking dog alarm is a reliable and cost-effective home security system that provides an excellent layer of protection for your house.
